Travis Kelce has explained his White House shenanigans.
Earlier this week, when the Chiefs visited the White House, Kelce deviously approached the microphone at the podium and started to say, “I’ve always wanted to do this …” before his quarterback Patrick Mahomes swiftly whisked him away.
On his “New Heights Show” podcast with his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis explained the purpose of the whole charade.
“Obviously, the president, at the podium, it’s iconic, and how he addresses the public — to my fellow Americans. That’s all I wanted to say, dude,” Travis said.
Jason was surprised, asking his brother, “That’s all you wanted to say?”
“That’s it,” Travis said. “I shouldn’t have started off with ‘I’ve always wanted to do this.'”
Jason thought if his brother had gone this route he might not have been so quickly thwarted.
“If you would’ve started off with ‘My fellow Americans …’ that would’ve been such a showstopper,” Jason said. “I don’t think they would’ve kicked you off. If someone gets up to the podium and says, ‘My fellow Americans’ it’s like an immediate, ‘OK, what’s this dude about to say?'”
Travis was aware he got bailed out by his quarterback.
“Pat knew that I was in over my head,” Travis admitted.
Jason concurred, “Pat knew right away when you pointed, he was like, ‘There ain’t nothing over there. This is a flanking move if I know Travis. He’s a flanker.”
Travis revealed that he might have played this trick once or twice before, and that Mahomes knew exactly what type of ruse was going on.
“He’s seen that one before,” Travis acknowledged. “Shout-out to Pat for keeping me from embarrassing myself at that podium in front of the world.”
