MARRIAGE LICENSES: EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2023 THE FEE IS $80.00
- Vermont Residents can apply for a marriage license in any city/town in Vermont
- Out of state applicants may apply for a marriage license in any Vermont city or town, however, we STRONGLY suggest applying for a marriage license in the city or town where the ceremony will actually take place. Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days from the date the license is issued (signed by the town clerk and one of the applicants).
- The Rutland City Clerk’s Office DOES NOT collect the $10 for a certified copy of a Marriage License at the same time the license is issued. You must come in or order a copy online AFTER your marriage takes place and the license is returned to our office.
Who can perform my wedding ceremony?
Your marriage can be performed by: a Supreme Court justice, a superior court judge, a district judge, justice of the peace, or an ordained or licensed member of the clergy residing in Vermont. If the officiate does not reside in Vermont, or is not recognized by the State of Vermont, they must file for a permit from a Probate Court in the county where the marriage will take place. In addition, any person over the age of 18 may register with the Secretary of State to become a temporary officiant to a marriage. For information to be a temporary officiant, please visit the Secretary of States website https://sos.vermont.gov/secretary-of-state-services/temporary-officiants/ or call (802) 828-2148.
